AMON TOBIN amon adonai santos de araujo tobin was born in rio, but claims it’s had little brazilain influence on his music. rather, his arrival in england at a young age and discovery of hip-hop and jazz, serve as the foundation for tobin’s dramatic and singular compositions. utilizing ominous drones, orchestral swells, growling bass and thick butterfunk-era breaks, tobin weaves ordered chaos from a massive wall of sound.

over the past ten years, tobin has released 6 full-length recordings on ninjatune, each one a bit darker, more complex and grandiose than the last. 2004 saw the release of tobin’s soundtrack for ubisoft’s popular video game splinter cell: chaos theory and the consequent use of ubisoft’s foley room as the center piece for his latest album, unsurprisingly titled, “foley room”. although musically he references the soundtracks of lalo schifren, jazz compositions of david axelrod, psychadelic rock operas of pierre henry, dark urban funk of dillinja and the cut-n-paste aesthetic of ninjatune, it is tobin’s remarkable ability to manipulate sound has been the key to his lasting popularity. wikipedia may explains it best: “Tobin is renowned for his creative use of sampling, from old recordings to motorcycles and even the acoustics of buildings which are stretched and skewed often beyond recognition. Resonances, delays, reverbs and a wide variety of sound effects also contribute to transform what was once familiar into something grotesque and unnatural, but nonetheless compelling.”

the end result is a visceral experience that evokes the fight or flight response in most listeners, and is one that is not lost with his equally compelling dj sets. don’t miss it on the metro’s massive sound system.
