abstract science and sound+ are proud to present a night of techno and
related music, featuring a rare live performance from the legendary
CONVEXTION, the return of DAVE SISKA and a stellar local line-up.
CONVEXTION-live!
gerard hanson is the sort of elusive figure that die-hard techno fans
adore. under the aliases convextion and E.R.P (event related
potential), hansen released a series of influential 12”s on sean
deason’s dearborn, michigan-based matrix records between 1995-1997.
hanson’s ability to integrate the dubwise sound of berlin’s basic
channel with the futurist soul of classic detroit techno was widely
praised by djs and eventually blessed by techno founders derrick may
and juan atkins—the self-titled “convextion” nestled between revered
detroit artists on may and atkin’s commercial mix releases. despite
the initial success, or perhaps because of problems related to it,
hansen cloistered himself in his hometown of plano, texas and released
only two recordings (on the tektite and down low labels) between 1997
and 2005. but thanks to the zeal of down low, 2005 marked the start of
a new string of 12”s and remixes (model 500, deepchord), followed by
hanson’s debut european live performance and long awaited full-length
album in 2006 (finally released on CD this june). his dramatic
emergence from obscurity and solid live performances have led to a
steady stream live shows in europe and japan. don’t miss this live
rare stateside performance!

DAVE SISKA
known for his long running radio show on WNUR (now defunct) and his
exquisite selection of fine techno and related materials, dave siska
has been sorely missed since relocating to san francisco in 2006. his
ability to delve into the depths of techno history and place it
side-by-side with best records of today reveals the relatively
timeless nature of techno music. his DJ exploits have seen him
performing alongside an impressive array of talent, including surgeon,
heiko laux, john tejada, dan bell, technasia, monolake, kit clayton,
phoenicia, richard devine, ectomorph, the advent, and john selway,
among others.

CHRIS WIDMAN
chris widman is a DJ that defies easy classification. host of the
weekly radio program abstract science (on WLUW 88.7fm) since it’s
inception in 1997 and a dj since 1995, his cohesive sets intertwine
records from across the electronic music spectrum and beyond. widman’s
comprehensive approach has led to billing with underground luminaries
amon tobin, apparat, cinematic orchestra, daedelus, deadbeat, dosh,
isotope 217, jaga jazzist, jan jelinek, john tejada, koed9, meat beat
manifesto, monolake, mr. scruff, plaid, the orb, scanner,
sleeparchive, UNKLE, telefon tel aviv and ulrich schnauss, not to
mention appearances at resfest, the Chicago world music festival,
chicago’s museum of contemporary art, Chicago cultural center, the
rhinocererous theatre festival, LA’s dublab.com, germany’s club
bogaloo, and many of chicago’s choice venues (including metro, empty
bottle, abbey pub, double door and residencies at smartbar and
sonotheque.)

JEFF PIETRO
jeff pietro won’t say how exactly how long he’s been djing, but from
his intensity and refined selections, it’s clear he’s had a lifetime
of experience scrutinizing music. so it’s no surprise he teamed up
with karl meier to run the now sadly defunct “easy listening for the
hard of hearing” nights at sonotheque and with dave siska to run the
ultra underground vermilion label. this is his first bio.
MERRICK BROWN
this recent transplant from austin, texas doesn’t deserve to be at the
bottom of the bill: merrick brown has been a fixture in the texas
electronic music scene since he started djing in 1994. most notably,
his work as a dj and promoter at numerous club nights and his labels
tektite, home to one of the world’s few convextion releases, and
chalant.
