tonite: AUTECHRE (via sound+) on wluw
+ dubstep.fm showcase w/ FSTZ @ smartbar

we are happy to introduce a new feature resurrecting and broadcasting material from the sound+ archive. starting as an email to a small group of friends in 2007, it quickly blossomed into a finely tuned and immense resource for downloading live performances and dj sets. sporting a diverse--yet razor sharp aesthetic--sound+ archived recordings ranging from CAN and JOY DIVISION to MONOLAKE and PATRICE SCOTT. sadly, in late 2009, the sound+ website was hacked and for various reasons, forced to shut down most of the archive (special projects and many reference links remain). abstract science has asked sound+ to curate some personal favorites for our listeners. first up is an absolute classic:
AUTECHRE live p.a. recorded @ flex in vienna, austria-1996
sound+ notes: sean booth + rob brown, of manchester uk, met in 1987 when they were both teenagers who shared a mutual love of breakdancing, bmx biking + hip hop culture. early sound experiments included using an old reel-to-reel, a cheap casio sampler, a roland 606 + a drum machine. they started making a name for themselves by hosting a radio show, disengage, on which they would play their own tentative work. encouraged by the responses, they released their first record in 1991 called "cavity job" under the name of m.y.s.l.b. productions. within a year, two of their tracks were included on the seminal warp records compilation, "artificial intelligence," amongst luminaries such as the black dog, b12 + aphex twin. they released their first album, "incunabula" in 1993 with a steady stream of records + side projects ever since. blurring the lines between music genres, they continue to push the boundaries of sound + have a new album, titled "(oversteps –" due out in march. photo by pablo sanz almoguera.
