tonite: VLADISLAV DELAY on wluw
+ big bass thursdays w/ MRK1 @ smartbar

this thursday, we are happy to bring you a double dose of abstract science featuring another selection from sound+ on wluw:

VLADISLAV DELAY live p.a. recorded @ mutek festival, montreal, canada-2003 via sound+

sound+ notes: sasu ripatti, born in oulu, finland in 1976, produces organically visceral + lusciously textured sounds as vladislav delay. before entering the electronic music world, he was a jazz percussionist + cites "philly" joe jones, the drummer for the first miles davis quartet, as one of his primary influences. after experimenting with electronics within band environments, he started producing on his own + his first record, "the kind of blue," was released in 1997 on huume. ripatti has also released on the much-lauded chain reaction, mille plateaux + force tracks labels. resonating with other landmark artists of the 1990s, such as basic channel + pan sonic, he now collaborates with moritz von oswald + max loderbauer [the moritz von oswald trio] as well as with mika vanio, lucio capece + derek shirley [the vladislav delay quartet]. his other projects include; the dolls with composer craig armstrong + sound artist antye greie-fuchs, agf/delay with greie-fuchs + kinovida with visual artist lillevan. his aliases are uusitalo, luomo, bright people, sistol + conoco. ripatti performs worldwide on a regular basis + has a forthcoming sistol remix project featuring john tejada, carsten nikolai, faultydl + more. this live p.a. was performed in 2003 at mutek in montreal, canada. the duration is 105 minutes.

+ and the chicago debut of manchester dubstep/grime pioneer MRK1. few can draw a line from dubstep's orgins (when it was a sub-genre of uk garage) through it's breakout release (the "grime" compliation on APHEX TWIN's rephlex records), up to present moment, churning out dancefloor bomb after dancefloor bomb on his own contagious recordings.

tonite: THE FLASHBULB live at wluw
+ big bass thursdays w/ EXCISION @ smartbar

tonight on abstract science, we are happy to have chicago's BENN JORDAN aka THE FLASHBULB performing live in the wluw studios. we've been playing his records for a long time now and glad to finally have him on the show. THE FLASHBULB is playing live along with lablel-mate BARTEL and many others friday, march 19 @ the catalyst collective loft. more info at http://www.Psymbolic.com/events

Born in 1978 and raised in the sketchy Ashburn district of South Chicago, Benn Jordan began playing jazz influenced guitar before reaching the age of attending school. Without any proper musical training, his awkward style of inverted guitar playing and composition knew few restrictions and eventually panned out into full blown albums recorded on tape machines in his bedroom in the mid 1990’s. Being a one man band, Jordan grew quite fond of electronic instruments, which for a period of a few years dominated his compositions as he gained worldwide notoriety as an avant-garde electronic musician using the name “The Flashbulb”. In more recent years (and 30-something album releases later), Jordan has focused his efforts on writing more cinematic pieces and using an instrumental style closer to his roots. On the other side of releasing music and touring, Jordan has become a sought after film and television composer. These two worlds have merged in his hugely successful album of cinematic music “Soundtrack To A Vacant Life”.

tonite: WAX TRAX retrospective + RJD2 tickets on wluw

abstract science presents a special WAX TRAX retrospective in tribute to the label's deceased co-founder dannie flesher. a true chicago institution, WAX TRAX's rise paralleled that of house music in the '80s and '90s. house represented a mingling of disco, soul, funk, new wave and electronic music on chicago's south side, thanks to rise of dj culture and proliferation of cheap synthizers and drum machines. wax trax was the northside confluence for the other end of the spectrum, from new wave to electronic music, industrial, rock, punk and avant-garde. MINISTRY, FRONT 242, COIL, MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO, REVOLTING COCKS, KMFDM, PIG, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY, SISTER MACHINE GUN and MY LIFE WITH THRILL KILL CULT were some of the artists WAX TRAX put on the map, as well as popularizing a slew of uk artists by licensing THE KLF, UNDERWORLD and many of the early warp releases, including POLYGON WINDOW (APHEX TWIN), NIGHTMARES ON WAX, BLACK DOG, B12 and AUTECHRE for US distribution. check out cofounder dannie flesher's obituary in the chicago tribune for more about WAX TRAX.

also, listen to win tickets to see RJD2 at the metro, saturday march 13.
