tonite: WAX TRAX retrospective + RJD2 tickets on wluw

abstract science presents a special WAX TRAX retrospective in tribute to the label's deceased co-founder dannie flesher. a true chicago institution, WAX TRAX's rise paralleled that of house music in the '80s and '90s. house represented a mingling of disco, soul, funk, new wave and electronic music on chicago's south side, thanks to rise of dj culture and proliferation of cheap synthizers and drum machines. wax trax was the northside confluence for the other end of the spectrum, from new wave to electronic music, industrial, rock, punk and avant-garde. MINISTRY, FRONT 242, COIL, MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO, REVOLTING COCKS, KMFDM, PIG, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY, SISTER MACHINE GUN and MY LIFE WITH THRILL KILL CULT were some of the artists WAX TRAX put on the map, as well as popularizing a slew of uk artists by licensing THE KLF, UNDERWORLD and many of the early warp releases, including POLYGON WINDOW (APHEX TWIN), NIGHTMARES ON WAX, BLACK DOG, B12 and AUTECHRE for US distribution. check out cofounder dannie flesher's obituary in the chicago tribune for more about WAX TRAX.
