live performance recorded @ smartbar, chicago – october 2008
abstract science is proud to present a live performance from
convextion, recorded live october 2008 at smartbar. gerard hanson is
the sort of elusive figure that die-hard techno fans adore. under the
aliases convextion and E.R.P (event related potential), hansen
released a series of influential 12"s on sean deason's dearborn,
michigan-based matrix records between 1995-1997. hanson's ability to
integrate the dubwise sound of berlin's basic channel with the
futurist soul of classic detroit techno was widely praised by djs and
eventually blessed by techno founders derrick may and juan atkins--the
self-titled "convextion" nestled between revered detroit artists on
may and atkin's commercial mix releases. despite the initial success,
or perhaps because of problems related to it, hansen cloistered
himself in his hometown of plano, texas and released only two
recordings (on the tektite and down low labels) between 1997 and 2005.
but thanks to the zeal of down low, 2005 marked the start of a new
string of 12"s and remixes (model 500, deepchord), followed by
hanson's debut european live performance and long awaited full-length
album in 2006 (finally released on CD this june). his dramatic
emergence from obscurity and solid live performances have led to a
steady stream live shows in europe and japan. recorded at smartbar in
october of 2009 this performance was part of a night presented by
abstract science and sound+ featuring dave siska, chris widman,
jeff pietro, and merrick brown.
sound+ notes:
this set contains mostly unreleased material so we have much to look
forward to, the last nine minutes are sublime. his record on semantica
and a crc remix on métisse have both been released + also keep an ear
out for an upcoming e.r.p. album. he'll be playing at the audium in
madrid on 14.11.09.
thanks to gerard, sound+ and gridface.com for the photo.
