UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE live p.a. recorded at demf, detroit - may 2005 via sound+.
sound+ notes: underground resistance, a music collective from detroit, was founded in 1989 by mike banks + jeff mills with robert hood joining later. instigated by the recession + inner-city turmoil under reagan-omics, they focused their anti-mainstream musical activities to promote social awareness + facilitate political change. from their name to their identity-obscured performances, their militant approach to music has been compared to the black panthers' activities during the 1970s. influenced by chicago house + the first wave of detroit techno, the group also infused elements of acid, electro + industrial. after mills + hood left ur in 1992 to pursue their solo careers, "mad" mike banks recruited an ever-shifting roster for the group including: james pennington, gerald mitchell, dj rolando, andre holland, dj dex, buzz goree, dj 3000 + los hermanos to name a few. ur's music continued to evolve with elements of funk, latin, jazz, breakbeat + even zydeco. in addition to releasing the members' own respective works, the ur label + its sublabels have also disseminated music by renowned producers such as drexciya, scan 7, octave one, the martian + many more. through music created by the group, its members' numerous collaborations + various permutations, underground resistance has become one of the most influential names in techno.
